February 2018 Update

Dear Friends & Family,

We hope that you had a good (whirlwind) February and, possibly, even some time to enjoy the Olympics!  March has hit us very quickly and we are enjoying a bit of "warmer" temperatures.  The snow is still here and we received a nice winter wonderland last evening.  Jason has gotten to enjoy the weather by skiing twice, now.  A very kind family in our church gave him free equipment and the "mountain" is twenty minutes away!  We look forward to next winter when we can teach Lydia to ski for the first time.  Lydia is one step closer to the slopes as she took her first steps on her own, when trying to deliver a book to her dad.  In the next couple of weeks, our lives will change quite a bit as we will be chasing her everywhere!

Classes are going well as Jason is working through "Phase 3" of the program.  It has been encouraging to see progress and more understanding of the language take place.  He is understanding most of the conversations and, of course, the challenge is communicating and joining the conversations.  We are continually faced with how much it takes to learn a language and the depth of this process on an emotional, spiritual, physical, and mental side.  We appreciate your prayers and support!

As a church community, here in Saint-Jérôme, we are very excited about the future of Ecclésia.  The church building has been through the ups, downs, and waiting period of construction of the building.  A very generous donation recently came from a partnering church in Ontario who gave their month of January's tithes to the construction project on the building.  With such funding, we are now able to work on finishing the construction of bathrooms, a café, a drop-in day care, and classrooms for Fleur de Lys!  Starting in April, church groups will be coming in to help support with the manual labor of getting the various tasks finished.  Here is a video, thanking the Grandview church for their donation and by watching you will get to see some of the faces of those in our church!

One of the highlights of this month was being able to go to Carnival de Québec!  We had last been there for the event in 2007 when we were first dating.  It was fun taking part in the Québec/winter culture and we enjoyed our time with some of our friends from the area.  Here is a picture of us in front of Château Frontenac and with the "bonhomme de neige" (the carnival's mascot).

Andréa had her follow-up appointment with the GI doctor last Monday.  The colonoscopy results actually showed inflammation more representative of Chrohn's disease versus Ulcerative Colitis.  As the treatment path is the same for both diseases, at this point, he has given us 4 options of biologic treatment.  We are taking a couple of weeks to research and make a final decision on what route we would like to take.  We appreciate your prayers in this and all of the support you expressed in the last month.  Andréa has recovered well since the procedure and the steroid that she was given is calming her system down.  All 4 treatment options are quite expensive but the nurse has said that there is funding available so that anyone in such a condition can be served.

This last month we have been looking at ways to save money and a couple at our church offered their home for rent to us.  The home is located about 5 minutes from where we are now, allows for dogs and includes appliances.  Our landlord has found someone to rent our current house starting in June so we will be starting the moving process well in advance of the July 1st Québec moving day!  We are thankful for how God has provided for our needs in this process.  We will miss this home and our lovely seasonal room for classes but are grateful for the chance to be wise stewards of our money.

We appreciate your prayers in the following ways this month:
  • Continued language learning and chances for Jason to build confidence in the language.
  • Decision making for the treatment plan for Andréa.
  • Preparation for short-term construction projects and service teams.
  • Strengthening/deepening of relationships with those in our community
We are ever so grateful for your prayer and support in our lives!

For His Glory,
Jason, Andréa & Lydia Maul
