My UC has always meant that my worst symptoms are in the morning. This isn't true for all with digestive disorders/diseases, but from online discussions with the "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" listserv, it appears to be pretty common. Consequently, I started waking up extra early when my symptoms were at the worst so that way I would be able to eat and have plenty of (but sometimes barely enough) time to digest my food before first period started at 7:45.
Thankfully, my symptoms are under control right now. Still, my early morning habits have continued on...I use the time to eat, read, enjoy the quietness, prepare my lunch, and get ready. While most students (and teachers) look like they have just woken-up for first period, I've easily been up for at least two hours! Prior to UC, in the mornings, I would be moving as fast as I could to get out the door on time, while getting the most sleep as possible. Now, mornings are calm and a beautiful time to just enjoy the quietness.
This is just another example of how UC has changed my lifestyle and habits. Yet, in hindsight, it has altered my way of life for the better. Other positive examples would be: more sympathy for others with chronic diseases, increased cooking abilities, knowledge of food and gratitude for being able to physically take part in this world.
